Torrance, California

Torrance, California, located in the Southwestern Region of Los Angeles County, California. With the 1.5 miles of beautiful life guard patrolled sandy beach of the Pacific Ocean, 500 miles of sidewalks, warm temperatures, low humidity, and, low crime rates, the city upholds to its motto, “The Balanced City”.

History

In the 1900’s the land of the city was purchased from the Spanish by a Real Estate Developer named Jared Sidney Torrance who hired the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. to design the layout of the city.  It was not until 1921 that the city was named after Jared S. Torrance. The early buildings were designed by architect Irving Gill, who used a combination of Mission Revival and Modernist architecture. The city focused on agriculture, petroleum, and manufacturing things like canned fish to generate business within the city.

Housing and Density

Torrance is the 8th largest city in Los Angeles County and 33rd largest city within California.  With a population of 147,870, and a day time population of 250,000 as many people travel to the to work. Torrance is known for its diverse population. Among the residents are Portuguese, Dutch, European, German, Greek, Italian, Mexican-American and Japanese cultures. The number of Japanese resident’s concentration ranks the 2nd largest number within a city in the United States.  There are 58,047 Housing Units in Torrance per the 2010 Census. The city consists of 20.48 square miles and a population density of 7,102.2 persons per square mile (2010 Census).  

Education

Torrance City is serious about educating the youth with over 100 Schools within the city. The residents demonstrate the importance of the youth and education through sports and educational events held year around throughout the city. All events are recorded on a City Wide Events Calendar a made available to residents through the library, city hall, and on the Torrance City Website. The city is proud to serve its community with a robust Library system that includes 6 libraries. The 1.5 miles of beautiful lifeguard patrolled sandy beaches are a sight to see, spend the day at with the family, or go for an evening walk along part of the 500 miles of sidewalks.  Have a feel for fashion, fine dining or just love to shop? There are many choices and nationally known Brands within the 2.5 million square feet of the Del Amo Fashion Center. This gigantic mall was named the largest mall in 1982 with over 200 stores and restaurants.
