Manhattan Beach – South Bay Luxury and Lifestyle
The City of Manhattan Beach, the “Pearl of South Bay”, was once a mecca which drew returning servicemen from World War II who were looking for a place to settle and raise their families near the beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. Today, the City of Manhattan Beach draws millions of visitors a year, who come for the beach volleyball, surfing, and people watching. Manhattan Beach is a favorite among many high-profile celebrities, because of its easy commute to Los Angeles, high-ranking schools, and the fine-dining, boutique shopping, and art venues found in the downtown area.
Located in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, Manhattan Beach was ranked by GQ magazine as one of the six top beach communities in the United States (2014), and has been named to numerous other “best” lists. The community plays host to the Manhattan Beach Open Volleyball Tournament and International Surf Festival every August.
Manhattan Beach is 19 miles southwest of Los Angeles, and located on the south end of Santa Monica Bay. It’s approximately 3 miles from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and provides easy access to US 405.
The Manhattan Beach area has been featured in numerous movies, TV shows, and music videos, and is a favorite among filmmakers. Films such as Point Break, Tequila Sunrise, Jerry McGuire, and others have used parts of the city as backdrop for filming.
The wide, clean, sandy beaches provide ample recreational activity, including dedicated bike and walking paths that stretch from Santa Monica to Palos Verdes. In addition to traditional beach activities, popular Polliwog Park provides an outdoor amphitheater, dog park, playground, and picnic facilities.
In total, there are over 69 acres of park land set aside in Manhattan Beach, which includes 21 acres for the Manhattan Beach Parkway, and 48 acres of additional parks and recreational areas.
The beach climate is tempered by the ocean breezes, and is typically 10-15 degrees cooler than more inland communities in Los Angeles County.
Housing and Density
The population of Manhattan Beach is approximately 35,000 residents, according to the 2010 Census, and the city encompasses approximately 3.88 square miles. With over 40 acres of recreational beaches along 2.1 miles of beach-front land, Manhattan Beach provides approximately 1224 acres of residential property.
Residential real estate in Manhattan Beach is among the highest in the country. Luxury and lifestyle meet in this high-profile community, and residential real estate in this area commands prime prices. In 2013, it was reported by DataQuick that more homes over $1 million were sold in Manhattan Beach than in any other city in California.
The popularity of Manhattan Beach is compounded by the top-ranked schools available to families residing in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. There are five public elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school serving the community. Ranked as the 6th top school district in the United States by Forbes Magazine, among numerous other accolades, the school district is situated in a community ranked as the 6th most educated city in the state of California, and 2nd in the Los Angeles County (according to US Census Data).
