Rancho Palos Verdes - The Mingling of Nature and Culture


The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is a site of renowned historical landmarks, as well as unique geographical features. Wayfarers Chapel, also known as the Glass Church, makes its home here. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the late 1940’s and incorporates the landscape into its geometric designs; Wayfarers Chapel is listed in the  National Register of Historic Places. The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is an affluent suburb of Los Angeles, and is noted for its stretching views of the ocean and wide spaces of unfettered land.

Loved by residents and visitors for its small city atmosphere, Rancho Palos Verdes was named by WalletHub (personal finance advice site) as one of the best small cities in the United States. This study was based on several factors, including school system quality, number of restaurants per capita, economic health, and safety. It ranked 149th in economic health and 118th in safety. Every year, residents of Rancho Palos Verdes come together to celebrate the 4th of July Celebration.



Rancho Palos Verdes is 31 miles southwest of Los Angeles, and located on the south end of Santa Monica Bay. It’s approximately 17.6 miles from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and provides easy access to US 110.

The Rancho Palos Verdes area has been featured in numerous movies and TV shows, and is considered to be a geographically-unique area and a place to escape the typical Southern California crowds. Movies such as Dick and Jane, 50 First Dates, Hot Shots Part Deux, Innerspace, and Entourage have been filmed there. Small screen productions also made their backdrops as Rancho Palos Verdes; among these are Knots Landing, Awkward (MTV show), Sliders, Sea Hunt, 90210, The O.C., and True Detective.

Recreational Activity

Rancho Palos Verdes has plenty of opportunities for recreation. Its nature preserve includes about 1,400 acres which are made up of 11 individual reserves; these include the 424 acre Portuguese Bend Reserve. These areas have many networks of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and cycling.

There are 18 parks in Rancho Palos Verdes, which include a variety of facilities. These parks provide something for everyone, whether it’s taking the dog to Rancho Caninos Dog Park, learning about the area’s natural and cultural history at the Point Vincente Interpretive Center, or taking in the breathtaking ocean views at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park. Available activities and amenities include hiking, bird watching, playgrounds, jogging paths, and beach strolling, to name a few.


The climate of Rancho Palos Verdes is temperate and sunny with just 16 inches of rain per year, compared to the nation’s 39 inch average. With an average of 279 sunny days per year, Rancho Palos Verdes ranks 82 out of 100, where 100 is the most comfortable climate on Sperling’s Best Places comfort index; the national average is 54 (2017).


Housing and Density

The population of Rancho Palos Verdes is approximately 41,643 residents, according to the 2010 US Census report, and the city covers about 13.39 square miles. The population density is 3,092.6 people per square mile.



The popularity of Rancho Palos Verdes  is compounded by the top-ranked schools available to families residing in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. There are two early childhood centers, ten elementary schools, three 6-8 intermediate schools, two comprehensive high schools, and one continuation school serving the community.

Ranked as #5 out of 455 Best School Districts in California, and #7 out of 404 Districts with the Best Teachers in California, Rancho Palos Verdes proves its suitability for families (Niche 2017 Best Schools).
